Located on the east side of Kinross , on the shores of Loch Leven , opposite Loch Leven Castle , Kinross House represents a classically elegant Palladian mansion by Sir William Bruce - , the master of that style. Set in The house also boasts a magnificent formal garden and was described in by Robinson Crusoe author Daniel Defoe as "the most beautiful and regular piece of architecture in Scotland, perhaps in all Britain".
Possibly intended as a residence for the unpopular King James VII - , then the Duke of York, with the expectation that he would be prevented from succeeding to the throne, in the event Bruce built Kinross as his own home. Bruce began work on the gardens by and the house was built between and Subsequently finding himself out of favour and effectively unemployed, he was unable to complete his original plan for the house. Howard Colvin described him as 'the effective founder of classical architecture in Scotland'.
Bruce purchased the Kinross-shire estate in He and his son John Bruce began work on the gardens but did not start work on the house itself until Shanks' three or four assistants earned 20 merks by the half year, a similar quantity of meal and a pair of bounty shoes worth half a crown a pair. A number of children were also employed as weeders for between 2 pennies and 4 pennies a day.
