Her painting completely burned by the Lighter Leaving the cursed gallery of the Fabricated World without immediately killing Garry or Ib in order to replace at least one of those existences. Mary has long blonde curly hair and blue eyes.
She wears a one-piece green dress with a white collar, white cuffs and a white lace at the end. She also has a tie around the collar similar to Ib's, only hers is blue in color. She also wears long black stockings and brown shoes. When seen in her portrait, she is wielding a yellow rose with two hands. Mary seems to be a cute, cheerful girl at first glance. She is also impatient, and often misunderstands things. Mary's behavior may be the sort of behavior her painter, Guertena, imagined her to be like.
Also, note that Mary, even if she acts childish which is usual for her age , shows that she is as mentally developed as Garry, an adult. Mary is shown to dislike Garry since she may be jealous of him and wants to use him as a human that will replace her in the Fabricated World. However, Mary is two-faced and changes her mood and relation to anyone instantly, but this is the result of her waiting for freedom.
Even she doesn't show it, Mary trusts Garry which is seen in the new ending Painting's Demise where she calls for his help. Mary at first seems to be a shy little girl that ended up in the distorted world with Ib and Garry, but in actuality, she is actually just another painting that took on a life of its own. Weather Mary directly influenced the hallucinations of Ib and the bunnies is unclear, though I believe she was not aware Ib was seeing bunnies.
Weather he figured out her motives for keeping Ib there of not was not specified, but I think he had his suspicions. Garry gets caught by Red Eyes, and he is temporarily rendered insane. She wanted to render him unable to recall the information he found out, but also unable to remember Ib. I believe that she wanted to try to force Ib into thinking that the real Garry was still back at the vines, and that the Garry before them was a fake.
This is quite obvious by her dialog, of which I would like to remind you: Mary has almost never lied. Mary tries to get Ib to go away from Garry, but her plans are foiled when Ib smacks him to his senses. Ib then hugs him, which I think makes Mary very sad, angry, jealous and, frustrated. This also is foiled when the three try to leave and Mary drops her rose.
This rose…. This, combined with her possible leftover anger from the previous incident, caused to to snap and lash out violently against him. She has no other option, really. She has very rarely lied. She helps Ib in the brown rooms truthfully.
She was having a breakdown, obvious by the dialog of the other options. One of her few intentional lies was when she was trying to convince Ib that insane Garry was a fake. When Garry and Ib enter the sketchbook, Mary starts to come after them. When they unlock the way to the toy box, she pushes Ib and Garry down into it.
This was an opportunity for her, she wanted to trap them there until she could think of a way out of her situation. Doing too many bad things or not socializing with Garry enough brings you to the bad endings, the worst, in my opinion, being Forgotten Portrait.
Forgotten portrait is gotten if both Garry and Mary die, but Ib returns. This…this scene really pisses me off for one reason. The only reason why this are so much of a mess: miscommunication. They jump to actions, to conclusions. And I hate it. I believe that if they had tried to talk to Mary, to try to understand, that perhaps things could have been resolved. Lack of communication is the folly of all three characters. Mary asks Ib if she wants her rose back. He hands over his rose, his life, to Mary to protect Ib.
Garry urges Ib to continue as he begins to collapse…. They still confuse me, and the best I can do is guess. I can guess that perhaps she had enough of him, and she knew that if he let him live that he would retaliate or escape with Ib like all her other motivations.
I can try to justify her actions as revenge for her dolls, or her anger for standing in her way. He was her greatest obstacle throughout the entire game, and perhaps that in and of itself is the reason.
She was desperate, willing to do literally anything to get out, to get what she wanted. No one would stay with her, no one would be her friend. She is simple in the fact that all she wanted was a friend and to get out.
